Benhadj Djillali is contemporary painter whose work explores light, memory, and the subtle interplay between abstraction and figuration. Born and raised in Algeria, he melds North African visual traditions with a modern sensibility, using layered color fields, textured surfaces, and gestural mark-making to evoke landscapes of personal and collective memory. Djillali’s practice moves between studio painting and site-responsive projects, where color and material choreograph spatial and emotional resonance. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across the Maghreb and Europe, and is held in private and institutional collections. He lives and works in Algiers, continuing to probe the boundaries of memory, place, and the painterly gesture.
